The adolescent intensive outpatient program at Options Behavioral Health in Indianapolis, Indiana, provides therapy and support services to youths ages 12-17 who have been struggling with mood disorders, anxiety, and other mental health disorders. As the least intensive level of treatment Options provides, IOP is ideal for adolescents who have completed a higher level of care and can benefit from step-down support to facilitate an effective transition back to independent living. Adolescents can also enter as direct referrals. 

Adolescents who participate in IOP at Options will complete three hours of treatment three times a week, for a total of nine weekly hours of care.  

Typical length of stay in IOP at Options is six weeks, though the specific time your child will remain in the program will be determined according to their needs, progress, and goals. As is the case with all levels of care at Options, duration of care and other treatment-related decisions are made according to what’s best for the patient.

Each youth ages 12-17 who participates in IOP care at Options in our Indianapolis, Indiana, facility will have a customized experience based on their unique strengths, needs, and goals. Depending on those specific factors, the following are among the elements and modalities that may be incorporated into their treatment: 

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) 
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) 
  • Trauma-informed therapy 
  • Person-centered Rogerian and Adlerian approaches 
  • Medication management services 

Adolescents must have a primary diagnosis of a mental health disorder to be admitted to IOP care at Options, though we also treat those who have a substance use disorder as a secondary diagnosis. Some of the mental health concerns we commonly treat include: 

  • Major depressive disorder

  • Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD) 
  • Adjustment disorders

Group therapy plays an integral part in the treatment process for our young patients in the adolescent IOP at Options. Group sessions allow youths ages 12-17 to share their thoughts, learn from the insights and experiences of others, and receive guidance and feedback from a trained professional in a safe, comforting environment. Options offers two types of groups for our adolescent IOP patients:  

  • Psychoeducational groups: Informative sessions on relevant topics such as mental health and addiction education, managing symptoms, dealing with co-occurring disorders, and related matters 
  • Process groups: Structured safe spaces in which to share feelings, express emotions, and exchange support with peers who are struggling with similar concerns

Discharge Planning

When a youth ages 12-17 has completed their time in the adolescent intensive outpatient program at Options, they will leave with a thorough discharge plan.
